The Lucifer Effect by Philip Zimbardo

About the Movie

urrently, the only authorized full-length film on the Stanford Prison Experiment is Quiet Rage (to watch the trailer, click on the image to the right). Recently, however, Maverick Films has contracted to make a feature-length movie based on the experiment. Stanford University has granted permission to use the school's name and image, contingent upon the final script conveying the facts and events as they actually happened.

The director and co-script writer (along with Tim Talbott) is Christopher McQuarrie, Oscar winner for his remarkable script of The Usual Suspects.

The producers are Christopher McQuarrie, Brent Emery, Mark Morgan, and Guy Oseary.

Casting is currently underway in Los Angeles and New York by veteran casting director Lynn Kressel (Bad Boys, Don Juan Demarco, Spider Man, Way of the Gun).

Lead actors are being selected to play the characters of:

  • Philip Zimbardo (Prison Superintendent and Principal Investigator)
  • Christina Maslach (heroine psychologist who provoked early termination of the study)
  • Carlo Prescott (paroled prisoner, study consultant, and head of the mock parole board)
  • and perhaps others, notably Craig Haney (SPE research assistant, Professor of Psychology and Law)

Update:

Icon Entertainment Intl. has picked up international sales rights to Christopher McQuarrie's upcoming feature project "The Stanford Prison Experiment." Set to shoot this October, the movie is co-written by McQuarrie and Tim Talbott, and will star Kieran Culkin, Paul Dano, Jesse Eisenberg, Charlie Hunnam, Ben McKenzie, Giovanni Ribisi and Channing Tatum. McQuarrie and Talbott produce alongside Maverick Films' Brent Emery, Mark Morgan and Guy Oseary, and Bill Vince for Infinity Features. John Ptak of Arsenal, who brokered the international deal with Icon, is representing North American rights. The movie will be shot on the Stanford campus in Palo Alto, California, and in Regina, Canada. This will be McQuarrie's second outing as a director, following his 2000 debut "Way of the Gun." He won the original screenplay Oscar for "The Usual Suspects" in 1996, and is currently working as a writer and producer on the Bryan Singer/Tom Cruise WWII project "Valkyrie" for United Artists.

Stay tuned for updates...
